National Reconciliation Week

A Time for Reflection and Action

Every year, National Reconciliation Week begins on May 27th and ends on June 3rd to mark two significant dates in Australia's history and contribute to reconciliation in Australia.

May 27th, 1967, marked a milestone in Australian history when more than 90% of Australians voted in a referendum to give the federal government power over Indigenous affairs, paving the way for the 1967 Referendum, which was a turning point in the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the Australian government.

June 3rd is the anniversary of the High Court Mabo decision in 1992, which established native title rights for the Meriam people of the Murray Islands in the Torres Strait, recognizing the traditional ownership of their land and waters.

National Reconciliation Week is an opportunity for all Australians to reflect on our shared history and work towards a more just and equitable future. It is a time to celebrate the many cultures that make up Australia and to acknowledge the unique contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This week is also a time to take action towards reconciliation. We can all play a role in creating a more inclusive and respectful society by learning about Indigenous culture, listening to Indigenous voices, and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives.

National Reconciliation Week is an important opportunity for all Australians to come together and work towards a better future for all.
